For a city stay, first consider the airport train and the places you can reach from your accommodation. A rental becomes more useful when your plans include several coastal or inland stops. You can collect it for that part of the trip.
Málaga Airport car rental or train first?
Search for Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport (AGP) if you want to collect on arrival. Aena publishes the airport’s car rental directory. Match the named supplier and collection instructions to the offer, including whether a shuttle or an off-airport office is involved.
The airport is also on the C1 train line between Málaga Centro Alameda and Fuengirola. If your first days are in the city, compare a train transfer and later rental against keeping a car parked. Check the current timetable and how you will reach your final address. Aena’s airport train information.
For late arrivals, confirm opening hours, the delay procedure and any collection charge in advance. An attractive price is only useful if you can collect under the conditions you booked.
City access and parking deserve a plan
Málaga has a low-emission zone with rules linked to vehicle classification and phased access conditions. Before driving into it, check the current city information for the actual car. Also ask your accommodation for the permitted approach and parking entrance; a room address is not always the correct place to navigate to. Málaga City Council’s zone information and map.
Do not assume a rental car has unrestricted access to every street. Check the supplier’s instructions and local signs, including any pedestrian-only access. Add accommodation parking to your budget and compare it with collecting the car when you leave the city.
Choose a manageable Costa del Sol route
The Costa del Sol tourism board suggests routes around Nerja and Maro, the white villages, and inland towards Ronda. Use these as ideas for separate outings instead of trying to fit the whole region into one drive. Official Costa del Sol road-trip ideas.
- A coastal day: choose a small number of stops and check parking near the places you want to visit.
- A village visit: identify a suitable car park before following navigation into the centre.
- An inland drive: check the actual route and weather, and allow time for unfamiliar roads and breaks.
Compare the transmission, luggage space, mileage and permitted area of use. Choose the car for your passengers and route; an SUV is not automatically needed for a paved sightseeing trip.
Quick answers for your Málaga rental
Should I collect at the airport or in the city?
Compare both with the same driving days. Include the transfer to the office, its opening hours, parking and return arrangements. There is no universal cheaper option.
Can I add Gibraltar or another country to the trip?
Check the exact destination with the supplier before booking. Permission, fees, cover and assistance can differ. Do not assume a Spanish rental agreement automatically allows every cross-border excursion.
Before paying, check the payment card and deposit requirements. Use our pickup checklist when collecting and returning the car.
