A rental car can give you more control over a Curaçao itinerary, especially when you want to explore beyond your accommodation. Start by deciding which days you need it, then check the collection arrangements, payment card and complete rental cost. The Curaçao Tourist Board recommends a car for visitors who want to explore, while noting that some hotel or resort stays may already offer enough nearby options. Curaçao Tourist Board: deciding whether to rent

Use this guide to prepare a shortlist. Your chosen supplier’s conditions and booking documents remain the reference for your particular rental.

Do you need a car for the whole stay?

Write down the places you want to visit and check what transport your accommodation offers. If your plans are concentrated around your hotel, compare a shorter rental with collecting a car immediately on arrival. If you intend to make several independent day trips, compare the full-stay rental too.

A hotel transfer, where offered, or a taxi can cover the airport journey if you decide to rent later. Confirm the arrangements before traveling. The Tourist Board lists both options for reaching accommodation from the airport. Airport-to-hotel transport

Airport counter or shuttle pickup?

Curaçao International Airport lists rental counters next to the Arrivals Hall and also identifies shuttle rental operators. An offer described as an airport rental therefore needs a closer look at the collection instructions. Curaçao Airport: rental information

Before booking, establish:

  • Whether you walk to a counter or use a shuttle.
  • Where your particular supplier meets arriving customers.
  • Its collection hours for your arrival date.
  • What happens if your flight is delayed.
  • Where to return the car and whether a transfer back to the terminal is involved.

Keep those instructions with your confirmation. Use the supplier’s exact collection details rather than assuming every company follows the same airport procedure.

Check the driver, documents and payment card

A valid driving licence is required on the island. Rental companies may also impose minimum-age or driving-experience requirements, so check the exact conditions before reserving. Tourist Board: driving-licence requirements

For a concrete example, Alamo’s published Curaçao Airport policy currently states a minimum age of 23, an additional fee for drivers aged 23–24, and a credit card in the renter’s name. It says debit cards and cash are not accepted at this location. These are that branch’s published conditions, not island-wide rules or a recommendation of that supplier. Alamo Curaçao Airport: rental policies

Ask your chosen supplier which original documents to bring and whether your licence needs an International Driving Permit or translation. Confirm the card type, cardholder name and available funds required for the deposit. Resolve unclear requirements in writing before booking.

Compare the complete rental cost

Put shortlisted offers side by side using the same pickup and return times, driver details and vehicle needs. Record the amounts that apply to your trip:

ItemWhat to record
Rental chargeTotal for the complete period, with stated mandatory charges
Chosen extrasAdditional driver, child seat or other equipment you need
Collection and returnAny stated delivery, out-of-hours or different-location charge
ProtectionIncluded cover or waivers, exclusions and any selected additional product
Payment timingAmount payable now and amount due at collection
DepositRequired hold or payment, recorded separately from the rental cost

Read the cancellation and fuel conditions alongside the price. For protection, check the excess, exclusions and claim process, including whether a product involves reimbursement after you pay. If you intend to rely on separate insurance, ask that insurer about your specific trip and vehicle.

Check the rental terms before booking.

Driving, parking and fuel

Traffic drives on the right in Curaçao. Read the official traffic guidance before your trip and follow local signs rather than assuming junctions operate exactly as they do at home. Tourist Board: traffic rules

For a visit to Willemstad, plan how you will pay for parking. The Tourist Board describes paid parking in much of Punda and parts of Otrobanda. Its guidance lists coins or a prepaid parking card for meters and the Flowbird app for online payment. Check the signs, current tariff and payment instructions where you park. Tourist Board: parking and fuel

The same source notes that filling stations become less frequent away from Willemstad and that payment before filling is common. Plan a fuel stop before a longer outing, and check accepted payment methods before you begin. On the return day, follow the fuel requirement stated in your rental agreement and keep the receipt.

Before leaving the collection point

Match the vehicle and rental agreement to your booking. Walk around the car, record its condition, check the fuel level and have discrepancies addressed before departure. Confirm the procedure for reporting a problem and save the supplier’s assistance number.

For the return, establish where the inspection takes place and how you receive a return record. If returning outside staffed hours, obtain the instructions in advance. Keep your condition photos, fuel receipt and final statement together.

Quick questions

Can I assume a debit card will be accepted?

No. Check the specific location and offer. The Alamo airport example above requires a credit card; do not generalize from another branch or country.

Is the deposit part of the rental price?

Record it separately. Check whether it is a temporary hold or payment, the amount needed and the release conditions for your booking.

Does an airport offer always mean a terminal counter?

No. The airport distinguishes rental counters and shuttle operators. Read the instructions for the company named in your reservation.
