A car can be useful for a trip with several coastal towns or accommodation away from transport routes. For a stay centred on Faro itself, compare the days you will drive with the cost of parking and collecting a car later.
Faro Airport car rental: check the collection route
Use Faro Airport (FAO) when searching for an airport pickup. ANA lists rental operators and their opening hours on the official Faro Airport car rental page. Opening times differ, so match the actual office to your flight arrival.
For each offer, read whether collection is at the airport, at a meeting point or after a shuttle transfer. An airport search label alone does not establish the arrangement. Save the supplier’s directions and ask how a delayed flight affects collection. Include any agreed late-collection charge in your comparison.
Choose your Algarve base before your car
Pick a base around the places you most want to see. Portugal’s tourism board highlights Faro, Tavira, Lagos and Silves, alongside the region’s beaches and Ria Formosa islands. These give you different starting points for a holiday; you do not need to cover them all. Explore the Algarve with Visit Portugal.
- Faro and nearby days out: work out which days need a car before paying to park it throughout a city stay.
- A coastal base such as Lagos or Albufeira: check parking at your accommodation and the beach access you intend to use.
- A touring trip: group nearby stops together and allow time to park, walk and enjoy them.
Choose a car with space for your passengers and luggage. If you need an automatic, make that part of the comparison from the start. A compact car may be easier to park, but boot space still needs to work on the airport journey.
Algarve tolls and parking: avoid outdated assumptions
Infraestruturas de Portugal set toll charges on the A22 to zero from 1 January 2025. Older advice describing every A22 trip as chargeable can therefore mislead. This does not mean every Portuguese motorway is free. Check your intended route and ask the supplier how any toll device, service charge and toll payment work. Official A22 toll announcement.
Ask your accommodation for the parking entrance, access instructions and any nightly charge. At beaches, use designated parking and follow the signs on arrival. Keep parking and fuel in your trip budget, separate from the rental charge and refundable deposit.
Quick answers for your Faro rental
Can I take the car from Portugal into Spain?
Only if your specific rental agreement permits it. Ask about written permission, fees, assistance and whether the intended return location is allowed before booking a cross-border route.
Will a debit card be accepted at pickup?
That depends on the offer and supplier. Check the required physical card, the main driver’s name and available funds. Paying online does not establish that the same card will be accepted for the deposit. Read our payment card and deposit guide.
Use the complete-price checklist to compare matching dates and collection arrangements. Then take the pickup checklist with you.
