About Captain AL — The Crew Behind the Deals

I am an active wide-body captain, not a marketing agency. Every hotel rate, car-rental code, and gear pick on this site has been checked against a real crew-rate source before it goes live — because I would not send my own crew to a deal I have not verified myself.

Quick answer: Airline Crew Discount has been curating verified crew-only travel deals since 2006. The site is run by Captain AL — an active Boeing 777/787 wide-body captain at a major European legacy carrier with 32 years of airline experience, 19,000+ flight hours, and 70+ countries visited. As of June 2026, the resource covers 738 verified staff rates worldwide and serves 9,500+ crew subscribers.

Who is Captain AL?

Captain AL wearing a headset at the controls of a vintage aircraft, flying low over open countryside
At the controls — the name is a pen name, the flying is real.

I fly the Boeing 777 and 787 for a major European legacy carrier. Before that I flew the 767-300 and the 747-400 — on which I also served as a Type Rating Instructor (TRI) and Type Rating Examiner (TRE). Across 32 years and 19,000+ flight hours I have operated to 90+ countries as crew and set foot in 70+ of them on layovers that were long enough to matter.

Off the flight deck, I fly gliders and vintage piston aircraft and volunteer as a firefighter in the Netherlands. I started this site in 2006 — originally as Alomax, renamed airlinecrewdiscount.net in 2011 — because crew-only rates were scattered across union boards, airline intranets, and word-of-mouth — nowhere centralised, nowhere verified. I wanted one place that actually worked.

Why a pen name?

My airline does not authorise active flight-deck crew to comment publicly on commercial matters. “Captain AL” is a pen name that keeps me in compliance with those rules while still letting me contribute to the crew community. The credentials are real — the name is the only thing changed. The About page has carried this disclosure since the site launched.

Editorial Standards

We follow the same three-word checklist I use at 41,000 feet: aviate, navigate, communicate.

1

Aviate — verify before publishing. Every deal is checked against its current crew rate before it appears here. If I cannot confirm the rate is live, the post does not ship.
2

Navigate — link claims to verifiable sources. Personal experience is labelled as such. Third-party data is linked to its primary source. Numbers are dated in the text itself.
3

Communicate — disclose everything commercial. Affiliate links and sponsored content are flagged every time. You never pay more because of a link on this site.

Corrections to published articles are addressed within seven working days. If you spot something wrong, contact us and we will fix it.

How We Earn Money

Airline Crew Discount earns commission from a small number of vetted affiliate partners — hotels, car rental, insurance, and travel tech. When you book or buy through a partner link, we receive a small fee from the partner. You never pay more because of that link — crew rates are the same whether you arrive via this site or book direct.

We do not sell list positions. A deal appears here because it passed the crew-rate check — not because a partner paid for placement. Sponsored content, where it exists, is labelled clearly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Airline Crew Discount free to use?

Yes. The site and the deals directory are free for all airline crew. The newsletter is also free. We earn revenue through affiliate commissions paid by partners, not by charging readers.

Who can use this site?

Airline crew and travel-industry professionals: commercial pilots, cabin crew (flight attendants), air traffic controllers, ground staff, and travel-industry employees holding valid crew credentials such as a crew ID, ID90 or ZED ticket eligibility, or a travel-industry badge.

How often is the site updated?

Deals are checked continuously; full audits run at minimum quarterly. Each article shows a “Reviewed” or “Updated” date so you can see exactly when the information was last confirmed against a live source.
